Group or "Our" Writing Style

We often speak of writing "style," which in reality is not one concept but four. I recommended Strunk and White's The Elements of Style as a guide to general or "correct" writing style.

That's the first concept of "style." The other three are:

Group or "our" style
Individual or "my" style
Structural style

Group style is the subject today.

A book you may have to consult much more frequently than Strunk and White is the style manual used by the organization you're writing for, the book whose purpose is to make sure published articles are consistent within a publication or among several publications. In recent years, every company I've worked with has adopted The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual as its bedrock decider on matters of style. Within its 300-plus pages you are told:

o Not to use a comma before the and or but in a series--e.g., Attendees were Mary, Martha and John.
o To spell out all whole numbers below 10 and to use figures for 10 and above,
o To capitalize Hades but not hell,
o To use gale to describe "sustained winds within the range of 39 to 54 mph (34 to 47 knots)
o That pingpong is a synonym for table tennis, and Ping-Pong is a trademarked name, and
o A lot of other stuff that seems to cover the Universe As We (Should) Know It.

Be aware that the first rule cited above runs counter to Strunk, who felt the final comma was needed to avoid confusion. I find it interesting that several editors I know whose official arbiter is the AP guide are unaware of its comma rule. (I know this because I've had them insert the things in my copy!)

My first full-time writing job was with a department that had its own style guide. Other than specifying how to treat department and division names and job titles, it had only three rules:

1. Follow Strunk re commas, and
2. Use employe rather than employee
3. Follow the AP Guide for everything else.

In the three years I worked for that company, I never got used to either of the first two rules. But I obeyed them. Group style--agreed-upon usage--is not negotiable. Think about it as good communication manners--and not institutional repression (or cramping) of "your" style.

Tomorrow belongs to Asia's Entrepreneurs?

I'm looking to buy a rental property in Oxford - near to where I live. Last week I browsed the web sites of six local estate agents, clicked the "contact us" button of all six, asked one of two questions and to be added to their mailing lists.

Within two hours one had called me, discussed my situation and given excellent advice and service. As for the others - nothing, zero, not a dickie bird - after seven days.

Unfortunately that experience is not unusual in Europe or in the US.

It's the small details that delineate excellent service from the rest and for me this is a prime example. Guess which agent is going to get my business.

In Asia that attention to detail and outstanding service simply runs in the blood - and Singapore is simply the world leader. Singapore has a multicultural population of 4.5 million, no natural resources and no history of empire but it has a GNP per head almost identical to that of the European Union and growing. Singapores success has been built on service and delighting the customer - always and in a manner unparalleled anywhere else in the world. From the legendary service and memorable experience of flying Singapore Airlines (now the most profitable airline in the world - is there a connection I wonder?), to the remarkable performance metrics achieved at Changi airport (for example: no waiting at immigration and a matter of honour that your bag gets to the belt before you do), through the delight of staying in a Singapore hotel to the courtesy of taxi drivers and in-store sales staff.

Contrast that with the experience often felt when staying in a hotel in the UK - memorable only for a feeling of having been ripped off; or of riding in a New York taxi where, as often as not, you have to give the directions - that is if youre lucky enough to get a cab driver that speaks English.

Whilst Singapore is currently pre-eminent in matters of service and customer delight I see many other Asian nations aspiring to knock them off that top slot.

This then is the background out of which Asia's entrepreneurs are growing - and growing fast. A background quite simply of living in customers shoes and striving to delight them each and every time you impact with them.

I recently spoke at the "New Wave Leadership" conference in Singapore and had the privilege of sharing the platform with some of the top entrepreneurs, CEOs and business thinkers in the region - people like Ron Sim of OSIM. This is a business, under Ron's guidance, that is achieving fabulous worldwide growth and excellent returns in a market dominated by the big Japanese corporates. Sunny Verghese of Olam International was another memorable speaker - sharing his story of his company's transition from a green-field start-up to a global leader in the supply chain management of agricultural products and food ingredients.

These then are the entrepreneurs to whom the global future belongs. Why? - not just because they have customer service in their blood but they have other unique skills also. For example they seem to have an effortless ability to sell globally that others do not. Whilst we can all bring to mind successful global corporations from many national backgrounds my experience is that there are national "fault lines" that become apparent particularly when you look at smaller middle sized companies and the way they operate.

In Europe, for example, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and the UK are better than most at doing business around the world with successful major corporations like Nokia, Philips and Glaxo Smith Kline respectively but among smaller companies I still find a reluctance to do everything possible to make it easy for their overseas customers to buy from them. All too often, for example, I come across companies that are only prepared to sell in euros or pounds and will not contemplate selling to their overseas customers in their own local currency - no matter how strong it is.

Similarly US companies will certainly "talk the talk" on service and customer focus but all too often it is only skin deep and they fail to "walk the talk". In the US exporting is all too frequently seen as what you do when the home market takes a tumble - and many US companies really do seem to believe in a "one size fits all" mentality and fail to even attempt to understand the local business needs. When Disneyland Paris was in development Disney Corporation executives would not accept the local advice that in France you simply have to include wine on the lunch menu in any restaurant. Only when the business came perilously close to chapter 11 did this and other adjustments to the US model to adapt to local needs get belatedly made.

The Japanese fault line seems also to be an reluctance to adopt and adapt to local conditions - and I've also seen something of a nervousness and an insecurity in Japanese executives when they are outside their own country - mirrored also by middle sized German company executives and this leads them to a lack of perception of local business cultures.

Asian, and particularly Singaporean, business leaders seem immune from such "fault lines" - not only do they normally have the ability to speak both Mandarin Chinese and English giving them immediate access to both the largest and fastest-growing economies of the world - but also they have neither the arrogance to believe their business model is the only one nor the lack of perception when away from their home market of others. They appear to follow the textbook method and learn about the local business culture, put on that coat and then define a strategy for success in that market that is then driven through to success. It is extremely impressive.

When you add to all that the endemic culture in the region of continuous education and professional development plus the support of governments not seen in a majority of countries you have to admit that the rest of the world has a real challenge on its hands unless it shapes up, and shapes up quickly.

Okay, I hear you say, so you are in love with Asia and particularly Singapore, but you must have some areas of concern also

Well, yes I do. It's to do with families and family businesses - which of course is how just about every business starts out in life. I was speaking to the CEO of an advertising agency in Singapore recently and he told me that his very best designer had come to him that morning to say that she was resigning. He, of course, asked why and what he had to do to keep her. She said that she was joining the family business and that her father had told her that it was time and that she could not demure. The business is in window joinery and you do have to wonder if firstly her talents are right for the business and secondly whether she will be fulfilled.

I work with many family businesses, indeed I'm a non-executive director of two, and I firmly believe that whilst family members should be enabled to join the business if they have both a desire and appropriate talent, compulsion is not in anybody's long-term interest - including that of the business. It may simply be a generational phenomena but I believe Asian family businesses need to think about this.

They perhaps need to learn from the mistakes of the past. We have an expression in Britain: "clogs to clogs in three generations". This refers to the footwear that used to be worn by the working man and the fact that many family companies whilst highly successful under the entrepreneurs that conceived them are then destroyed by the next two family generations.

Josiah Wedgwood, of pottery fame, was one such 19th century entrepreneur. He was said to have the flair and creativity of the French, the marketing skills of the Americans, the manufacturing talent of the Japanese and the financial acumen of the Swiss. His was a truly world-class entrepreneurial business that was pre-eminent in its day but within two generations it had all but disappeared. Entrepreneurs by definition are risk-takers and it can often be that subsequent generations are naturally risk averse perhaps arguing that they want to protect what they have inherited. This alone can cause the rapid decline in the fortunes of the business unless the founder has put in place a very strong business culture that can survive the generations.

In this business world we are now in mediocrity is not tolerated - all of us believe as consumers or business buyers that we have an absolute right to buy excellent products and services. It is clear therefore that increasingly the differentiator between the successful business and the rest is not the quality and performance of the basic "product" thats a given - but the quality of the experience the customer has - the "wow" factor.

I see Asian companies get more "wows" than most and the rest of the world needs to take note.

So those five estate agents in Oxford you need to get your act together - and just maybe you could then conquer the world but only if the Asian entrepreneurs let you!

Tampa Schools Take Safety Seriously

Everyone in any school system has a desire to keep kids safe. Parents, teachers, administrators, and school board members and employees work together to ensure the safety of students. Parents and schools alike rely on each other to educate their students on safety rules as appropriate to the age of the children. Tampa Schools are highly conscious of the need to keep their students safe, and have plans in place which do so. Two such plans in Tampa Schools are the Life Threatening Allergy (LTA) Responsibility Commitment, and the Jessica Lunsford Act.

The Life Threatening Allergy Commitment is in place to save childrens lives. Millions of children throughout the country suffer from life threatening allergies, and Tampa Schools are ready to deal with any situation that may arise. All members of the district of Tampa Schools have responsibilities to keep kids safe, including, but not limited to the students themselves, parents, and all Student Nutrition Services employees. Effective September 1, 2005, changes in legislation under the Jessica Lunsford Act (a law enacted after the abduction and murder of Jessica Lunsford) now require all Tampa Schools contractors, subcontractors, and their employees to undergo a Level II background screening. This screening consists of an FDLE/FBI search. If a Tampa Schools contractor or their employees or subcontractors and their employees will be at any of Tampa Schools when students are present, have direct contact with students, or have access to or control of school funds, they will be required, as mandated by Florida State Law to undergo this screening.

If the contractor or subcontractors have no personnel who meet any of the three criteria, the law does not apply and no action is necessary. The fingerprints must be kept current and are required to be updated every five years. Any break in service to Tampa Schools will require individuals to be re-screened at their cost. Outside agencies reports will not be accepted. Prior to being fingerprinted, each individual will be required to disclose any previous criminal history on the Criminal Record Information form. This document must be received and cleared by the Tampa Schools Office of Professional Standards before being fingerprinted. All individuals will be required to meet the background qualification guidelines for contractors before being considered eligible for Tampa Schools site access.

After eligibility is assessed, notification of such will be sent to the contractor, along with the clearance for his or her employee(s) to report to Fingerprinting. The potential Tampa Schools contractor will receive a document that indicates the employee has been fingerprinted and is now considered an approved contractor/employee once the district receives the fingerprint return from FDLE/FBI. This usually takes 24 to 48 hours. Additionally, contractors will be mailed ID badges for their employees that must be worn at all times while present at any Tampa Schools campus. It is obvious that the district of Tampa Schools is highly aware of the necessity of keeping its students safe.

1) Local Currency

It's a good idea to take a small amount of local currency with you whenever you travel, if only enough to last you for your first few hours. You'll probably need to arrange travel from the airport to your hotel for example, and local currency is the easiest way to pay for these initial expenses. The exchange rates charged at airports are notoriously expensive, so buy some currency before you leave and you'll get a much better deal.

The drawback to carrying currency is that if it gets lost or stolen, it can't be replaced. For this reason it's best to use another form of travel money for most of your funds.

2) Travellers Cheques

These are the traditional way of carrying money abroad. When you buy the cheques, which can be in Sterling, Euros or US Dollars, you have to sign the stub of each cheque in the presence of the teller. Once abroad, you can convert the cheques into local currency by signing the other half of the cheque at a currency exchange, where the teller will compare the two signatures and also inspect your passport.

5) Prepaid Cards

These are a relatively new kind of plastic card, which are used in much the same way as credit or debit cards, with the big difference that you have to 'load' the card with funds before you can spend with it. They are a secure way of carrying money, as the card is replaceable if lost, and as it can only be used in conjunction with a PIN number then even if stolen it's difficult for a thief to make use of it. There will, however, still be exchange commissions payable when you use the card, and also usually a flat fee for cash withdrawals.

The main thing to bear in mind with travel money is that while each of the above options is useful, not all are suitable for use everywhere in the world. The best advice is not to rely on a single kind of travel money, but to take a sensible mixture of cash, local currency, and plastic or cheques, to make sure you can always get local currency when you need it. One such landmark is Cerro de la Bufa. And Chihuahua is home to the ruins at Paquime and many collections of traditional art from the Raramuri Indians.

In Guayamas, Bahia de Kino, San Carlos and Puerto Penasco, you can find a lot more features, including zones of archeological interest and more beaches.

Central Mexico

Starting from the northern high plateau to the tip of Sierra Madre range down south, this region has plenty for a person to see in terms of culture and scenery. You have Mexico City, with amazing examples of architecture like the old buildings in the Historic Center and the old world style of Basilica of Guadalupe.

You can visit the many archeological sites open to tourists. There are a number of lakes, rivers, waterfalls, springs, forests and caverns to go to. And if you want to activities, plenty are offered. You can do cave exploring, rafting, scuba diving, nature observing, and rock climbing to name a few.

My Least Favorite Diamond Shapes for Engagement Rings

Marquis engagement rings are oval shaped diamonds which have both ends pointed. Marquis diamonds have 56 facets and are twice as long in length as their width. The 2 to 1, length to width ratio is considered ideal and something to think about when shopping for a marquis, as it will effect the sparkliness of the diamond. A good cut is important cut is also important in that it helps prevent the dreaded "bow tie" effect, whereby the center of the diamond is darker and has reduced brilliance. While the Marquis diamond is by no means my favorite shape, it boasts a number of cool properties:

1) It has a cool story behind it: The shape of the stone was said to be designed for Louis XIV of France who wanted a diamond fashioned after the Marquise de Pompadour's smile.

2) The marquis diamond is considered one of the most flattering for the hand as it makes the finger look more slender

3) The stone may look bigger than it actually is. The marquis diamond not only has a large surface area but the elongated lines can make the carat size look larger than what you plunked down money for.

Yes, I'm a pear-hater. Perhaps I've been influenced by some of my friends who also don't like the pear. I remember one time when an acquaintance of mine got engaged. My friend, who was closer to this person, forwarded me a picture of her pear diamond with a disparaging caption about the ring shape. All cattiness aside, everyone has different views on what looks good, so don't let my taste unduly influence you.

The pear shaped diamond is considered to be a round brilliant diamond at one end and a marquise shape at the other. It is sometimes referred to as a tear drop due to its rounded side and pointed edge. A length-to-width ratio between 1.45 and 1.75 is typically considered most desirable for the pear. One thing in particular to avoid when shopping for a pear shape is the dreaded bow tie effect: a dark area in the middle of the diamond which looks just like a black bow tie. It is hard to avoid the bow tie effect completely with the pear. One nice thing about the pear is that it tends to make one's fingers look slimmer.

I hope I'm not offending anyone by saying that I think heart shaped engagement rings are ugly. I used to wear rings with hearts on them in middle school, thus I connect heart shaped rings to a typically horrifying period in most anyone's life. Plus, the symbolism of a heart shaped engagement ring lacks creativity. We already know you're in love, if your wearing an engagement ring. At this point, your woman's not only got your heart, but your savings account, freedom, and body, mind, and soul. You're whipped. No need to let the world know this with a big, cheesy heart. Don't get me wrong...there are plenty of heart-shaped diamond admirers. Some would say that the heart shape is the most romantic of all the diamonds. Hearts can either be wide or long. They are most similar to the pear shaped diamond but have a cleft at the top. When looking to purchase a heart, make sure the top arches are symmetrical in appearance. Assymmetrical hearts will look more like pears. When looking at other women's ring fingers, you won't see too many hearts. Hearts are less typically found in an engagement ring setting and more commonly seen in earrings or pendants. I will say one good thing about heart shapes: that they cost around 20%-25% less than round diamonds.

English style always had its admirers, especially in the sports and luxury car segments. Certainly, the same is true about German luxury... but, through each type of premium cars, admirers are looking for something different.

British luxury is usually expressed in smooth and warm materials and design. The German one is always expected to instil the additional "made in Germany" perception, one of robustness and durability.

But what about a completely different formula of power, luxury and styling, like... an Anglo-German one this time?

No, it is not a new car company. It is rather the Range Rover Sport (American Ford Motor Co. owns the British Land Rover, Jaguar and Aston Martin brands) power boosted and electronically retuned now with a new inside-out styling kit from the German tuning company, Arden.

The over thirty-years-old tuning company took the 4.2-litre supercharged Range Rover Sport and made it an "Arden Range Rover Sport AR6 Stronger" with 520hp instead of the standard 390hp, and 680Nm of torque, instead of 550Nm. That's a 33.33% and 23.63% boost in power and torque terms respectively.

Where did the boost come from? The "Arden Range Rover Sport AR6 Stronger" got also a... displacement boost, from its original 4.2-litre capacity to 4.8 litres. That's 14.3 percent growth, for those who like comparative measurements.

In driving terms, these figures reduce the British SUV zero-to-100 km/h performance from 7.6 seconds (standard) to 6.1 sec., with a 270 km/h top speed instead of the standard 225 km/h, bearing in mind that such a top speed is rarely achieved for obvious regulatory or safety reasons between the rest of the traffic on motorways.

Anyway, for comparative measurements fans, that's a 19.7% drop on the zero-to-100 km/h chronometer, and a 20% rise for the top speed.

Of course, such power, torque and speed boost goes hand in hand with other corresponding enhancements.

In exterior style and aerodynamic enhancements, the Arden front and rear spoilers blend nicely with the no-less elegant basic design of the Range Rover. What the Arden design adds is a time-resistant touch that will still look modern for years from now, making a resale of the vehicle more attractive.

On top of that, the more imposing appearance doesn't come at the detriment of body proportions or any of the model's functionalities.

To achieve better braking system ventilation, Arden furnishes its front spoilers with air ducts. Ducts are even incorporated into the hood to guarantee better cooling for the increased performance of engine.

With its diffuser look, the rear spoiler features openings to the left and right for the tailpipes of the Arden stainless steel exhaust system.

Additionally, Arden widens the front and rear wings by approximately 4.5 cm. A side skirt trim serves as a visual link between the line which begins at the front and rear spoiler and continues over the widened wings. All parts are manufactured of carbon fibre reinforced composite.

The sidebars are illuminated and highlight the lower edge of the entry door. This eye-catching feature makes it also easier to get in the car or to leave it in the dark.

On the wheels side, 295/30 R22 tyres are fitted to Arden's 10-spoked, 10x22 inch light alloy wheels providing a sporty look the appropriate traction.

In addition, the airy look of the wheels allows a glimpse of the powerful brakes, which are also adapted to the increased performance. The high-performance system features 6-piston fixed callipers at the front and 4-piston fixed ones at the rear. These exert their force on the ventilated, perforated brake discs and ensure sustained deceleration.

Beyond the new driving feel and the visual tuning, the ear has its rights too. That's where sound comes into play. The Arden Range Rover Sport AR6 exhaust system abandons its British reserved nature. Now, it notifies the public, in its own ways, about the evolution which took place under the hood.

The Arden engineers have made an exhaust system with a sport catalytic converter. Besides the retuned sound, the high-performance system also has a big end, made of four two twin - tailpipes. Even without the motor running, the new exhaust shows silently that something special has been fitted under the hood. Arden guarantees a high-quality, long-lasting product manufactured completely from corrosion resistant stainless steel.

The Arden AR6 Stronger chassis comes originally with an electronic air suspension system that provides optimum tuning at all times and in every situation. However, the electronic module offers two further driver programs in addition to the standard settings. It can be lowered by 23 mm to improve the handling and to lower the centre of gravity. Inamed Corporation is one and Mentor Corporation is the other. Both of these California companies have fought long and hard to lift the ban through lobbying, studies and improved implant designs.

The lifting of the ban does not so much suggest the implants are safe as it suggests that no scientific proof exists linking them to any particular health problem. Wear in engines, gearboxes, and other mechanical equipment is caused by friction between metal surfaces. Lubricants create a protective film in order to prevent the metal surfaces from coming into contact. Taking a new approach, Total Productive Maintenance modifies the structure of the surfaces; making the metal smoother and providing long-term protection against wear. Conventional lubricants are used to create a film between metal surfaces in order to prevent metal-to-metal contact. In addition, lubricants also conduct heat generated by friction away from the area of contact. In an ideal situation the metal parts would slide on a "pillow" of lubricant and there would be no direct contact. In practice, no lubricant can totally prevent contact, especially in extreme conditions. When an engine is started in cold weather, for instance, the valve mechanism has to work for a short period of time without any lubrication at all. Problems can also be caused by many other factors: water, dirt, or other contaminants may enter the lubrication system, different parts may rotate at different speeds, or there can be significant variations in external conditions.

An expensive option

Various materials are added to oil during the lubricant manufacturing process to improve its properties, and these additives account for the differences between lubricants. The additives are intended to slow down the wear process or prevent oxidation, corrosion, and freezing. They may constitute as much as 75% of the lubricant price. Additives are also used to promote a stronger oil film, which can be achieved by adding materials that consists of long molecule chains. Other types of additives can be used to smooth and strengthen the metal surfaces, and there is evidence that these methods can slow the wear process and decrease friction. The best results are achieved when the mechanical part to be treated are still in good condition. The effect is, however, not long-lasting and such treatment can be expensive over the long term. In almost all cases, new additive has to be applied each time the oil is changed.

Building a new, smoother surface.

The micro relief of the surfaces consists of peaks and valleys, and heat is generated as the peaks are broken off by contact between the surfaces. The Ferro silicate crystals fill the microscopic holes and crack in the metal surfaces, and protrude above the original surface. The parts being treated actually increase in mass – a chance that can be detected using precision measuring equipment. The reaction ends automatically when the two metal surfaces no longer make contact and there are no more free ferric atoms.

Low friction coefficient

This results in a situation where two metal-ceramic surfaces are in contact. These surfaces have very low friction coefficient, even in dry conditions. The clearances are decreased, the operation of the machine is smoother, and there is a lot less stress on the components. Furthermore, there is no longer a critical need for lubricant to keep two coarse metal surfaces apart. There is less vibration, less friction, less heat, and less oil contamination. Depending on the type of equipment, Total Productive Maintenance can reduce fuel or energy consumption by 3-30%, reduce emissions by 10-40%, decrease spare part expenses, reduce repair costs, reduce the need for maintenance stops and increasing capacity utilization and reliability and equipment operating lifetime.
